Fashion at many of the coastal-style boutiques in the Cape Fear area can be a passage into a tropical island oasis. You instantly feel transported into a realm of dresses and cutoffs where sand and sun will be your instant BFF. Join us with stylist Victor Cortes at Island Passage to pick out some of this season’s hottest trends.

There is so much to choose from this year, but on the top of this summer’s trend list, and for our fashion feature, is the sundress. With so much variety, you can easily take any of these dresses from day to night by just adding a few accessories. One of our favorite maxi dresses was made of cotton and tie-dyed. We love its versatility. You can add a straw hat and some flat braided sandals with a crossbody purse to lounge near the water in the perfect daytime look. Then throw on some wedges, a glitzy necklace and a belt for an evening out. (continued below the photo feature)

One major trend this season is floral print and lots of it; there is also no lack of color! With so much going on this summer with prints and color, it leaves us with plenty of play room. You can try to mix-and-match with co-ordinates this summer to really stand out. The possibilities are pretty endless as to how to wear these infamous two pieces. Here we can also play with day and night looks.

Wearing a co-ordinate all together is the optimal chic look that can make any trendsetter stand out in a crowd, but mixing them up is the best of both worlds. On any given day you can throw on a pair of floral co-ordinate shorts with a simple spaghetti strap and sandals and look instantly put together, or wear just the top with a pair of trousers for a work look that will turn heads.

My usual go-to pant has always been a pair of skinny jeans – until I discovered printed flared jersey pants. Imagine having the luxury of wearing dressy yoga pants. Comfort and style join forces here in the most exciting way. The best thing about flared pants is that they will flatter mostly anyone. I usually opt for a simple print on bottom, but I find myself loving the bolder patterns this season. Don’t be intimidated to wear them, try them on; you won’t be sorry.

No getup is complete without a great handbag. There are so many accessories to include in a fashion feature this season, but who doesn’t love the classic clutch or cross body hobo? For a good mix, add a chain handle bag for some glitz or a fringe purse to go from work to play. There is also much to be admired in the shoe department for summer. Classic pointed-toe heels and flats are the way to go for most daily chores, but to really be daring try a chunky block heel. Not only are these new bold shoes comfortable, but they will take any outfit to the next level.

Between dresses and co-ordinates, shoes and handbags, our local boutiques have everything you need to play dress-up with this season’s hottest trends.
