Wilmington’s signature fall event, Riverfest, returns for its 40th season. As part of the activities, Riverfest Concert Venue presented by Apiture will offer free shows on Friday, October 4th from 6:30pm to 10:00pm. Entertainment on Saturday, October 5th starts at noon and will go until 10:30pm. The Riverfest stage will feature both local performers and touring bands.
The headliners for the two nighttime shows are familiar to attendees of the popular Downtown Sundown Concert Series. On October 4th, the Zac Brown tribute band 20 Ride will headline the stage. The show on Saturday, October 5th will be headlined by Tuesday’s Gone, a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band. In addition to these touring bands, WDI will also have local bands perform both days. The names and times of these performances will be announced in the coming days.
The Riverfest Concert Venue is a free, family-friendly event that will attract both local residents and out of town visitors. The concerts are designed to provide interesting and fun entertainment for attendees, showcase the area’s music scene and support the other Riverfest activities including the street fair, kids zone and fireworks show. Last year, over 30,000 people attended the festival despite changing dates due to Hurricane Florence.
“Apiture is excited to show our support of the Wilmington community by sponsoring Riverfest 2019 concerts. As a growing technology company in Wilmington, we know that events like these encourage the growth of our community and bring more talent to the Wilmington area. We’re looking forward to meeting attendees of Riverfest who are interested in learning more about Apiture.” said Chris Cox, President of Apiture. The concerts will take place in the Ligon-Flynn Parking Lot at 20 South 2nd Street. This location was most recently used for the Downtown Sundown Concert Series while construction is underway at Riverfront Park and along Water Street. WDI will work with the City of Wilmington and Lanier Parking to accommodate monthly parkers displaced by the Friday concert.
“Wilmington Downtown, Inc. is very excited to be producing this year’s Riverfest Concert Series and Beer Garden. WDI loves Riverfest because it is a celebration of our amazing Downtown. And, in honor of Riverfest’s 40th anniversary, we’re doing it up bigger than ever. Come out and join us for the music and fun!” said Dane Scalise, WDI Chair. “The lot at the corner of South 2nd and Market Street has been used for other concerts through the years so people should be
familiar with the site and appreciate the proximity of nearby shops, restaurants, parking decks and other attractions,” he said.
In addition to Apiture, the Riverfest Concerts will be sponsored by other local and regional businesses. Official sponsors include Carolina Marine Terminal, CityBlock Apartments, Bud Light, Adams Beverage, Dram and Morsel and Slice of Life Pizza. The Courtyard Marriott Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach serves as the official hotel sponsor. Local breweries will be represented by Edward Teach Brewery and Wrightsville Beach Brewery.
“We are very excited to be celebrating our 40th Anniversary this year! It has been quite the ride since the late 70’s, occasionally having to dodge hurricanes and tropical storms, but we never fail to have a great festival! We expect this year’s festival to continue that trend, with new vendors, new shows, a new concept for the concert venue and beer garden, and of course the popular fireworks display on Saturday night. We look forward to having you join us at North Carolina’s premier riverfront festival.” said Russ Deats, Chair of the 2019 Riverfest.
