An Island Home with Modern Refinements

Glide across the waters of the Cape Fear River to Bald Head Island, a sub-tropical hideaway, where time melts with the gradual canting of the sun and recollections of road-rage dissipate like strands of coastal clouds.

It has probably been everyone’s dream, at one time or another, to be able to live on an island away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Bald Head Island Limited has held fast to its commitment to creating a picturesque island community while maintaining the lush natural environment that dominates most of the island. As the sole developer since the mid-80s Bald Head Island Limited offers luxury properties and exemplary customer service for those seeking their own private oasis. Thanks to their sales division we were permitted to take a peek into one of their recently listed properties….

The coastal design of this waterfront home offers a timeless, modern flair by incorporating stainless steel accents like sculptured trusses in the living area, adding dimension and interest. Utilizing a neutral color palette, pops of cobalt blue evoke the great expanse of ocean traversing the span of three-quarter windows. A well-balanced and proportioned design is achieved with an asymmetrical fireplace flanked on one side by floating shelves.

The homeowner shared her vision of wanting a beachfront home that was inviting and comfortable; a place where guests could come and “not feel nervous” about strolling in from the beach with sandy feet and damp swimsuits.  She specifically requested durable products that would stand the test of time. Materials such as natural slate flooring, stainless steel fixtures, pickled oak shiplap ceiling accents, and bamboo cabinetry add warmth to the space and are used throughout this 4 bedroom, 4 ½ bathroom island retreat.

Neutral colors were intentionally used to draw on the surrounding elements of the water, sun, dunes, and sand.

Dark, speckled granite countertops are juxtaposed against an artistically ground stainless steel bar top, highlighted by pendant lamps, and wrapped in the warmth of bamboo cabinetry. A Sub-Zero refrigerator, Viking cooktop, wine cooler, double wall ovens, and dishwasher add the amenities needed for optimizing the openness of the floor plan while entertaining or just contemplating the ethereal stretch of ocean.

Architect Jay DeChesere designed this home so that in spite of having neighbors, the home maintains a sense of privacy and seclusion, explained the homeowner. She loves to entertain and when building the home it was important to have “room to hold a crowd” but not having space be so apparent. With slight adjustments in furniture, the dining area can accommodate up to 40 guests.

Every room has a little getaway

This two-story beach haven is sophistically furnished and boasts two master bedroom suites on separate floors. A freestanding fireplace is the focal point of the sitting area in the main floor’s master suite, the other side houses the sleeping area haloed by a tray ceiling and partitioned media wall. The en suite bathroom is not your typical washroom. A stainless steel Jacuzzi-style tub trimmed in dark slate makes relaxing an ultimate experience. “Every room has a little getaway,” says the homeowner, and the upper-level master suite is a private hideaway unto itself. Each room in the home is bathed in natural light that spills in from perfectly positioned windows.

This stylishly sophisticated oasis has its own private beach access, a two cart garage, and an outdoor rinsing station and grilling area.

Spacious sun decks and an expansive porch allow for the homeowner and guests to enjoy meals al fresco while settling in to watch the undisturbed splendor of passing boats and some of the best sunsets on Bald Head Island.
