Snoop Dogg: Rapping the Azalea Festival

By Sara Beck |

Many Wilmington locals will be pleased and somewhat surprised to hear that distinguished rapper Snoop Dogg will be headlining the Azalea Festival this year, taking the Belk Main Stage with opener Doug E. Fresh. Snoop Dogg has been a prominent figure in pop culture since the ‘90s, and his laid back music with heavy West coast influence evidently continues to inspire the hip hop industry today.

His musical style, which embraces a softer feel while still addressing subject matter that is specific to rap music, sets him apart from other artists and has brought the 44 year old great success. Although he’s released 13 studio albums and has been nominated for Grammy awards an astounding 17 times, Snoop’s major achievements extend past his musical career. The California native is also well known as an actor, having starred in the films The Wash and Mac and Devin Go To High School. With his classically cool demeanor and a voice that’s notoriously easy to listen to, it’s hard not to enjoy Snoop Dogg’s music or TV and film appearances. In fact, in January of 2016, a petition on was formed with the goal of appointing Snoop to narrate the popular nature series Planet Earth.

With the Azalea Festival quickly approaching, the excitement surrounding all of its entertainment events is spreading. Tickets for the Snoop Dogg and Doug E. Fresh concert, which will take place on April 8 at 7:00 p.m., are currently on sale on the Azalea Festival’s official website and at the Azalea Festival Ticket Office. Whether you’re a devoted fan who’s been with Snoop since the beginning, or a stranger to his music, this will be a show you certainly won’t want to miss.
