Screening & Saltbox Seafood Joint Cookbook Joint Launch Tuesday, October 15, at 8 PM
UNC-TV Public Media North Carolina celebrates the premiere of a fresh, new, half-hour documentary The Hook. Premiering on UNC-TV PBS & More Thursday, October 17, at 10 PM, The Hook offers a decidedly different look at North Carolina’s seafood legacy and acclaimed Durham Chef Ricky Moore, owner/chef of the Saltbox Seafood Joint restaurants and food truck. The Hook‘s premiere dovetails with the debut of Chef Ricky’s Saltbox Seafood Joint Cookbook, published by the University of North Carolina Press and available at area retailers and online.
To celebrate these releases, UNC-TV, UNC Press, Markay Media, The Regulator Bookshop and Motorco Music Hall host a celebration for The Hook and the Saltbox Seafood Joint Cookbook this Tuesday, October 15, at Motorco in Durham. The event is free and open to the public and features a special sneak preview screening of The Hook, a very special guest DJ spinning old-school hip hop and R&B, prizes and Saltbox Seafood Joint Cookbooks for sale and signing by Chef Ricky. Doors open at 6 PM and the program starts at 6:30 PM.
ABOUT THE HOOK
The Hook celebrates the seafood traditions of North Carolina’s coastline with Chef Ricky Moore. Chef Ricky steers his own ship—finding treasures in unsung stories and creating inspired seafood. Known for serving up seafood fresh from the coast, Chef Ricky traces the journey of bonefish from ocean to plate. The result? A fish fry honoring restaurants that offered safe haven to Black travelers in the Jim Crow South—and a celebration of the maritime eats and techniques which Chef Ricky loves. The Hook takes a deep dive into uncharted waters resulting in the funkiest fish show on the planet! Produced by Markay Media, the production team behind Emmy and Peabody-award winning docu-series A Chef’s Life, and co-directed by Saleem Reshamwala and Shirlette Ammons, The Hook is a presentation of UNC-TV.
ABOUT THE BOOK
In his inaugural cookbook, Saltbox Seafood Joint Cookbook, Chef Ricky tells the story of how he started his popular restaurants and food truck in Durham. The formally trained chef presents 60 recipes celebrating his coastal culinary heritage. Written with K.C. Hysmith, Chef Ricky explains how to pan-fry and deep-fry, grill and smoke, and cook up soups, chowders, stews, grits and seafood. Charts and illustrations explain the featured types, availability and cuts of fish and shellfish used in the recipes.
